SESSION 1
WEEK 1 – LAND OF A THOUSAND HEADS
An introduction to cartoon head construction where artists remain in the moment through improvisational decision making and the exploration of pure creativity by relinquishing control and allowing the characters to evolve through dynamism.
WEEK 2 – CREATURES IN THE CLOUDS
Provided with images of clouds, artists will be challenged to engage their imaginations as they squint at the cloud formations searching for hidden characters and creatures in the silhouettes. Once they spot a shape, they will trace the outline and engage their imaginations to evolve the character through spontaneous storytelling.
WEEK 3 – JAM-PACKED PUZZLE PAGES
Artists will learn to conquer the blank page by using every single square inch! Beginning with one simple character drawing, they will add another, and another. As space runs out, artists must flex their creative problem-solving muscles to create characters, creatures and objects that fit into the remaining spaces until the entire page locks together like a beautiful, unique, completed puzzle!
WEEK 4 – MAKEOVER MANNEQUINS
Artists will be introduced to cartoon character anatomy and provided with model sheets of existing character forms that have no faces or costumes, called mannequins. After tracing or replicating their favorite mannequin multiple times, the real challenge begins: turning that exact same foundation into a lineup of unique characters! Artists will be encouraged to alter the mannequin’s proportions to realize their creative vision!
WEEK 5 – EXPLOSIVE EXPRESSIONS
Equipped with mannequin head model sheets and a real mirror, artists will dive into a mindful discussion on how emotions and inner feelings physically reshape our faces. By studying their own mirrored reflections, and learning about facial muscles, artists will learn to use a mirror to help translate their own emotional performance onto paper, building their very own character expression sheet!
WEEK 6 – ARMOURED AND DANGEROUSLY SILLY
Artists will be dropped into a wacky, top-secret scenario where their wild ideas are the only defense against certain doom! Working as a team, artists will unlock their imaginations and engage cartoon logic to design a spectacular series of wacky props, magical machines, inventive gadgets, and magical artifacts. It is a high-stakes, hilarious test of pure creative problem-solving to save the day!

WEEK 7 – COLOUR ME EXCITED
Following some basic light, shadow and colour theory, artists will have a chance to experiment with alcohol based markers, water colour, diluted ink washes, learning to mask sections of their art and experiment with texture driven techniques using toothbrushes, sponges, straws and so much more.
WEEK 8 – PRESENTATION & ANALYSIS
Celebrating and reflecting on the artistic journey, recognizing personal wins and progress – an essential part of the process! Together we will analyze what worked so it can be repeated and dissect what didn’t to transform slip-ups into valuable lessons. Parents and guardians are encouraged to join the second half of the session to view the final comic creations.
